Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: How often should I get a dental cleaning?

A: Dental cleaning recalls can be done twice yearly or every three months. Your provider will discuss what they recommend as the best course of action for you because everyone is different! Those who show a higher risk of gum disease or decay are recommended to be seen more often than twice a year.

  • Q: Why do I need x-rays?

A: In order to effectively treat each patient, it is necessary to take diagnostic x-rays upon an initial visit as well as yearly x-rays to ensure there are no major changes. We offer in-office x-rays with our digital x-ray machine which means you do not have to go to another office for x-rays or wait for images to be developed. Single x-rays and full mouth x-rays are usually covered by insurance.

  • Q: Should I rinse after brushing my teeth?

A: No! It is a common misconception that it is better to rinse after brushing your teeth than not at all. This is false, though! After you brush your teeth, there is a protective covering of fluoride left over. If you rinse, either with water or mouthwash, you are essentially washing this protective covering away!

  • Q: Why do I have teeth sensitivity?

A: Tooth sensitivity can be attributed to many different things. Using toothpaste made for sensitive teeth like Sensodyne can help. We give out samples after every cleaning appointment! Clenching and grinding can also lead to tooth sensitivity in which case a mouth guard may be beneficial. You may also want to avoid overly acidic foods or drinks. There are a number of reasons why you may be experiencing tooth sensitivity, and if the problem persists or is something you are concerned about, feel free to contact us and schedule an appointment for a checkup!

  • Q: Why do I have a dry mouth?

A: There are many reasons for people to experience dry mouth and we can all agree that it can be extremely uncomfortable. Age can cause a person to feel their mouth is drier. Another common cause is medication like blood pressure, heart, and depression medication can cause this issue.

  • Q: How can I practice good oral hygiene at home?

A: We know you’ve probably heard this a million times but brushing twice a day for at least 2 minutes each time is the first step to good oral hygiene. Here are some other steps to take care of your teeth in between your dental cleaning appointments.

    1. Floss at least once a day. (If you are only flossing once a day, doing it at night is the best so you can get rid of any food that may be left in between your teeth before you go to bed!)
    2. Use mouthwash daily.
    3. Eat a balanced diet.
    4. Rinse your mouth with water after eating or drinking sugary products.
    5. Avoid tobacco products or smoking products.
